Dr. Charles Stephen Kimei
Dr. Charles Stephen Kimei, born on the 4th of August, 1953, married and blessed with three children. Kimei pursued his PhD (Money and Finance) at Uppsala University in Sweden (1981 – 1984) and published a thesis titled “Tanzania’s Financial Experience in the Post-War Period”.
Kimei was employed by the Central Bank of Tanzania (Bank of Tanzania) from April 1978 and up to 1998 where he held various positions: A Research Economist in 1978 rising to Head of Domestic Division Research Department in June 1980 before joining Uppsala University in Sweden for his PhD. While pursuing his PhD, he worked as a part time Intern on African Economies and Country Risks at Scandia International Insurance Company in Stockholm.
After PhD studies, he rejoined the Bank of Tanzania in December 1985 where he was promoted to be Principal Economist in Research Department overseeing Monetary Policy (Money and Banking), before assuming the position of Manager of the Department of Economic Research and Policy; and later promoted to the post of Director of Economic Research and Policy in 1992; and in January 1995 appointed to the position of the Director of Banking Supervision overseeing three Units, namely Licensing and Supervision of Commercial Banks; Supervision of Non-bank Financial Institutions, and Supervision of Foreign exchange Bureaus and microfinance Institutions.
Kimei was appointed Managing Director & CEO of CRDB Bank in June 1998, and held this position for more than 20 years up to October 2018. CRDB Bank Plc turned around from a loss making bank to a leading bank in Tanzania in terms of assets, deposits and profitability from year 2005.
